Post-operatively, we work with your surgeon and use the most effective, and well researched treatment protocols to return you to a healthy lifestyle.
Sprains/Strains: A sprain is a stretching or tearing ofa ligament, and a strain is a stretching or tearing of amuscle or tendon. Ligaments attach bone to bone, and tendons attach muscle to bone.Treatment depends on the jointinvolved and the severity of the injury. Our goal is tohelp facilitate healing and prevent or reduce scar tissue. Whenyou have a sprain or a strain, the body repairs itself with scar tissue. Scar tissue is a tough, inflexible, fibrous material that binds the damaged tissue together. This tissue is not as strong as the tissue it is replacing, making that tissue weaker, and it is inflexible, reducing that muscle or ligament's flexibility. If not addressed, this can lead to chronic re-injuring of the area. Weutilize deep manual techniques and ultrasound to break up the scar tissue and return the damaged tissue to a healthy state.
Balance and Safety Issues: Gait and balance issues affect many of us as we get older. The greatest concern with this is falling. Something that seems like a small issue, such as difficulty lifting your foot over the curb, or over a crack in the sidewalk, can lead to falls. Falling can lead to a myriad of much worse conditions such as a fractured wrist or hip.
Some common causesof adecrease in your balance may be a result of osteoarthritis, orthostatic hypotension, or medications you may be taking. We will help retrain your brain and body to move more effectively and safely. We will also assess you for assistive devices if necessary, such as a cane or a walker.
Deconditioning: This can happen to people of all ages due to living a sedentary lifestyle. The demands of your job, a medical condition, or a hospital stay, can lead to a period of inactivity that can cause your body to become deconditioned.Deconditioning can be identified by decreased muscle mass, decreased strength, muscle shortening, and decreased mobility. We will help reverse these effects by slowly introducing an exercise program that will address your entire body. We will improve your strength and endurance gradually, understanding that every person has a different exercise tolerance.
Pain Management:Physical therapyhelps to relieve pain, promote healing, and restore function and movement. We may utilize passive modalities such as heat, ice, electrical stimulation, ultrasound, and/or iontophoresis, or we may utilize active treatments such as massage, joint mobilizations, stretching, strengthening, and aerobic conditioning.
